Which software your jurisdiction uses
The software determines which laptops work.
Choosing a laptop
You need a machine that meets the stated specifications for operating system, memory, storage and battery health. Tablets and Chromebooks are often not supported, though some jurisdictions have their own rules. Mac and Windows are usually both accepted if they meet the specifications. Use the machine you have practiced on, with a healthy battery.
Registration, installation and the mock exam
Boards set deadlines for registering your device, installing the software and completing a mock exam. Do not wait. The mock verifies your machine and teaches the interface, and missing it can block you from the real exam.
Operating system updates
A new update can break compatibility with exam software. Turn off automatic updates as soon as you finish your setup, and check the board's guidance before installing anything.
Peripherals and power
Rules about external keyboards, mice and chargers vary. Confirm what is allowed and whether outlets will be available. Carry a fully charged laptop even if you expect outlets.
Editing and features
Exam software often disables spell check and copy and paste, or limits them. Practice under the same restrictions so you are not surprised.
If your laptop crashes or the internet fails
Proctors and technical staff have procedures. Most secure exam programs save your work locally and continue without internet. Follow the proctors' instructions and do not restart unless told to. After the exam, follow the upload instructions, and keep the confirmation.
Upload deadlines and confirmation
Many systems require you to upload your answers after each session or at the end, by a stated time. Confirm that the upload succeeded, and keep screenshots. If you miss the deadline, contact the board at once.
Handwriting options
Some jurisdictions allow handwritten answers, often with a request in advance. Consider whether typing or writing is faster for you. Practice the format you will use.
Common questions
Can I use a Mac for the bar exam?+
Usually yes, if it meets the exam software's stated specifications for your board. Check the operating-system version and whether your model is supported before registering.
What if my laptop crashes during the bar exam?+
Follow proctor instructions. Secure exam software normally saves your work locally, and technical staff can help you continue. Do not restart unless told to, and keep any upload confirmation.
Should I update my laptop before the bar exam?+
Not without checking. Updates can break compatibility with exam software, so turn off automatic updates once your setup is complete and follow your board's guidance.
