Bar Exam Passing Scores by State: Legacy UBE 260 to 270 and NextGen 610 to 620, Grouped

Which jurisdictions set the legacy UBE passing score at 260, 264, 266, 268 or 270, which have announced NextGen minimums from 610 to 620, and which jurisdictions do not use the UBE at all. Among the UBE jurisdictions this site tracks, 9 set the legacy passing score at 260, 1 at 264, 13 at 266, 1 at 268 and 18 at 270. NextGen minimums announced so far run from 610 to 620. Fourteen jurisdictions use state-drafted exams. Scores are set by each jurisdiction and some change, so confirm on your jurisdiction's own page before relying on a number.

01

How to read the scale

The legacy UBE is scored out of 400 and each UBE jurisdiction picks its own minimum. A difference of a few points matters: at the same skill level, needing 270 instead of 260 asks for about 10 more points out of 400. The same exam is used, so the questions do not change. What changes is how much of the total you need to earn.

02

Legacy UBE at 260

Nine jurisdictions set the minimum at 260: Alabama, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah and Wisconsin.

03

264, 266 and 268

Indiana is at 264. Thirteen jurisdictions are at 266: Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Washington and the Virgin Islands. Michigan is at 268.

04

Legacy UBE at 270

Eighteen jurisdictions are at 270: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

05

NextGen minimums announced so far

NextGen is scored 500 to 750 and each jurisdiction sets its own minimum. Announced figures in our data are 610 for Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, North Dakota and Washington; 612 for Guam and Palau; 614 for Indiana; 615 for the Northern Mariana Islands; 616 for Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland and the Virgin Islands; and 620 for Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Vermont. Oregon lists 615 for July 2026 and 620 after that. Other jurisdictions had not announced a figure when we last checked.

06

Jurisdictions that do not use the UBE

Fourteen jurisdictions in our data give their own exams: California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, Virginia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau and Puerto Rico. Some of these have moved to NextGen on their own timeline, so check each jurisdiction's page.

07

What a lower number does and does not mean

A lower minimum does not make the exam easier, since the questions are the same everywhere. It changes the target. It also does not tell you how many people pass, because pass rates depend on who sits. Use the number as a planning input: subtract your diagnostic estimate from the minimum to see how many points you need to gain.

08

Score transfers and the number that counts

If you plan to transfer a score, the receiving jurisdiction's minimum and maximum score age apply, not those of the jurisdiction where you sat. Pick the exam jurisdiction with the transfer in mind. Our transfer guide walks through the questions to ask.
