Georgia Bar Exam Study Guide and Outline for Specific State Subjects: Essays, MPT, and MBE Planning

A Georgia bar exam outline for specific state subjects starts from the current official subject list, essay materials, performance testing, and multistate components. Georgia candidates need a state-specific written plan in addition to multistate preparation. Use the Georgia Office of Bar Admissions’ current subject list, released essays and analyses, rules, and schedule for the exact administration. List every published state subject, overlapping multistate subject, question type, and session. For each state distinction, record the general rule, Georgia rule, triggering facts, and a released-question example. Outline and write before reading the official analysis. Compare issue coverage, Georgia law, fact use, counterarguments, and completion. Recycle missed distinctions into retrieval cards and new hypotheticals.

01

Create a Georgia outline for specific state subjects

02

Use released essays as the core writing sequence

03

Integrate, do not silo

Pair multistate doctrine with Georgia distinctions during the same week and schedule MPT or performance work throughout the course. A separate final-week state-law cram is fragile.

04

How Georgia weights the parts of its exam

Georgia states that a scaled score of 270 passes. The scaled MBE score is 50% of the total, and the written half is scaled to the MBE's mean and standard deviation. Each of the two MPT items carries a weight of 1.5, which is 50% more than each of the four essays. Adding the weights, the written half is 7 units: 3 for the two MPT items and 4 for the essays.

That arithmetic follows from the published weights: the MPT items are about 43% of the written half, roughly 21% of the total score, and the four essays are about 57% of the written half, roughly 29% of the total. A candidate who skips MPT practice gives up the equivalent of more than a fifth of the score. Every MPT and essay is graded whatever the MBE score, so there is no cutoff that excuses the written work.

Georgia's essay subjects, MPRE and two-step filing

The essays draw on Business Organizations, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Federal Practice and Procedure, Georgia Practice and Procedure, Non-Monetary Remedies, Professional Ethics, Property, Torts, Trusts, Wills and Estates, and UCC Articles 2 and 3. Secured Transactions is no longer a tested essay subject.

Georgia asks for two applications: first a Certification of Fitness, valid five years, then the Bar Exam Application. The MPRE requirement is 75 with no expiration date on scores. Georgia does not accept transferred MBE scores, and a lawyer admitted elsewhere may be eligible for the one-day Attorneys' Exam instead.

QUICK ANSWERS

Common questions

What score passes the Georgia bar exam?+

A scaled 270. The MBE is 50% of the total and the written scaled score is the other 50%.

How much do the MPT items count on the Georgia exam?+

Each of the two MPT items is weighted 1.5, against 1 for each of the four essays, so together they are about 43% of the written half and roughly 21% of the total.

Is Georgia Practice and Procedure tested on the essays?+

Yes. It is on the published essay subject list, along with Non-Monetary Remedies and Family Law, while Secured Transactions is no longer tested.

Is there a minimum MBE score for my essays to be graded in Georgia?+

No. All MPT and essay answers are graded, and there is no minimum MBE score required for them to be read.

What MPRE score does Georgia require?+

75 or higher, with no expiration date, so a score you earned for another state still counts. You get no Certificate of Eligibility until it arrives.

What is the Georgia one-day Attorneys' Exam?+

An exam of the two MPT items and four essays, without the MBE, for lawyers admitted in another jurisdiction who are eligible.

Do I file one application in Georgia or two?+

Two. You file the Certification of Fitness application first, then a Bar Exam Application once you hold a valid certification.

When does Georgia release scores?+

In 2026 it released February scores on the third Friday of April and July scores on the third Friday of September.
