The question families
The seven skills
NCBE lists the skills as legal research, legal writing, issue spotting and analysis, investigation and evaluation, client counseling and advising, negotiation and dispute resolution, and client relationship and management. Each can show up inside a question set. Practicing them separately, and then together, will feel different from MBE practice.
What you memorize and what is supplied
NCBE defines a scope of foundational concepts and principles that examinees are expected to know without resources, and other law is provided in the exam. Check the content scope for the specific exam date, since it changes over the transition. When a resource is supplied, use it, even if you remember a slightly different rule.
Working an integrated set
Read the client's goal and the documents first, then each question. Track which document each question needs, so you do not reread everything. Keep your answers consistent across questions in the set, since they draw on the same facts. Switch mode deliberately between analysis, research, counseling and drafting.
Short and medium responses
Some questions ask for a short written answer with a stated number of reasons or facts. Give exactly what is asked, in a compact rule, fact, conclusion shape. Longer responses should lead with the recommendation.
Counseling and negotiation
These questions ask you to separate the legal answer from the client's practical goal. Identify interests, alternatives, constraints and missing information, and propose steps that could be carried out. Apply the professional responsibility rules that limit what a lawyer may do.
Interface and time
Practice with the tools you will have, such as a notepad, highlighting and viewing multiple documents. Use official NextGen practice on the exam platform when available and time yourself, since three hours goes quickly when you move between formats.
