If you passed
A pass starts the admission steps: the oath or swearing-in, any remaining paperwork, and in some jurisdictions a window in which to complete them. A pass is also not admission yet. Character and fitness review runs on its own clock, and NCBE says its report can take up to 12 weeks, so confirm it is complete the same day.
If the result is unsuccessful
Two items are time-sensitive: the registration deadline for the next administration, and your score component breakdown. Building a full study plan is not urgent and works better with the breakdown in hand. Some states limit repeat attempts: Connecticut, for example, lets an applicant with four or more unsuccessful attempts apply only for the February exam.
- Confirm the next administration's registration deadline
- Request the component breakdown if it is not sent automatically
- Read the state's retake limits and the score-transfer rule for other UBE jurisdictions
- Wait for the breakdown before choosing how to study
When results are released
Release dates are set by each jurisdiction, not by NCBE. The State Bar of California scheduled the July 2026 results for November 6, 2026 through the applicant portal, about three months after the exam. Alabama releases about 8 to 9 weeks after the exam, Texas in mid-April and mid-October and South Carolina in late April and late October. Ohio released its 2026 results on April 24 and October 23. The release-weeks post lists every date each jurisdiction reported to NCBE.

Common questions
How quickly do I need to be sworn in after passing?+
It depends on the state. Some set a window for completing admission steps. Confirm your board's process the same day.
Does a pass mean I am admitted?+
Not yet. Admission also needs a cleared character and fitness review and any remaining state requirements, such as a state law course or pro bono hours. New York, for example, requires 50 hours of pro bono service.
Do I get a score breakdown automatically?+
It depends on the jurisdiction. Some send it with the result and others require a request, sometimes with a deadline.
What if I think my score is wrong?+
Most boards have a regrade or review request with its own deadline and fee. Ask your board; do not assume a general appeal exists.
Can I transfer a passing score to another state?+
Only to UBE jurisdictions that accept it, and each sets its own minimum score and age limit on transferred scores. See the UBE transfer guide for the rules.
When do states release results?+
California set November 6, 2026 for the July 2026 exam. Alabama releases about 8 to 9 weeks after the exam, Texas in mid-April and mid-October, South Carolina in late April and late October, and Ohio released on April 24 and October 23 in 2026.
