Interactive bar review lessons
The interactive bar review lessons are a sequenced 213-lesson curriculum that converts the master outlines into active study: teach, retrieve, attack, apply, self-grade, and revisit. Lessons are grouped by subject across all 9 foundational subjects and 213 modules, following the same order as the complete outlines so nothing here contradicts the reference material. Each lesson moves through the same six steps in order, read the black-letter rule, retrieve it without looking, run the attack sequence, apply it to a worked hypothetical, self-grade against the model, and revisit later, so progress is measured by demonstrated recall, not just pages viewed. Completion is saved on this device, and the study dashboard reads directly from it to build your coverage index.
Federal-question jurisdiction
Federal-question jurisdiction exists when federal law creates the claim or a necessarily raised, actually disputed, substantial federal issue may be resolved in federal court without disturbing the federal-state balance.
- 1
Apply the well-pleaded-complaint rule; ignore anticipated defenses and federal counterclaims.
- 2
A federal ingredient must appear in the plaintiff's properly pleaded claim.
- 3
Declaratory-judgment actions are analyzed by asking whether the coercive action would arise under federal law.
- 4
A private federal cause of action usually suffices; an embedded issue requires the narrower substantial-federal-question test.
Close the rule list and explain the doctrine aloud in your own words. Reopen it only to identify what you omitted or misstated.
| Step | What it proves |
|---|---|
| 1 · Teach | You have seen the correct rule stated once. |
| 2 · Retrieve | You can produce that rule without looking. |
| 3 · Attack | You can turn the rule into an ordered sequence of steps. |
| 4 · Apply | You can run that sequence against new facts, not the original example. |
| 5 · Self-grade | You can spot the specific gap between your answer and the model. |
| 6 · Revisit | The gap gets scheduled for another attempt instead of being left uncorrected. |
Why six steps, not one reading pass
Interactive bar review lessons: reading a rule and being able to produce it are different skills.
A lesson that stopped at "read the black-letter rule" would only ever test recognition. Retrieval, attack sequencing, and application are added because the exam does not ask whether you recognize a correct answer among four choices without also asking you to build the analysis yourself first.
The rule, its elements, and its most common trap are stated once, in the same words as the master outline, so nothing here contradicts what you already studied there.
02 · RetrieveYou produce the rule from memory before the lesson shows it again. A rule you can only recognize is not yet a rule you can use under time pressure.
The rule becomes a short decision order, then that order runs against a new hypothetical, not the same example used to teach it.
04 · Self-grade, then revisitYou compare your own answer against the model and mark the gap. Weak lessons return sooner in the study dashboard; lessons you demonstrated cold move to longer-interval review.
Where lessons fit around the rest of the course
A lesson is not a substitute for writing or timed practice.
Working through all 213 lessons builds the doctrine base every other tool assumes you already have. It does not, by itself, train issue-spotting speed under a clock or the discipline of a complete written answer — those are separate skills that need their own practice.
Once a subject's lessons are complete, run its matching drills in the essay and analysis bank so the rule gets applied in full-sentence form, not just inside a lesson's short hypothetical.
Use the attack outlines for review weekA lesson teaches the reasoning behind a rule; a printed one-sheet attack outline is what you actually reread the week before the exam, once the reasoning is no longer new.
Lessons are sequenced to match the full syllabus, so working straight through avoids leaving a foundational subject for the final week by accident.
Check how you study, not just your paceIf lesson completion is climbing but retrieval quality is not, the study method guide covers the difference between logging hours and doing the kind of practice that actually changes recall.
