Law School and the Bar Exam: What to Do in 1L, 2L, and 3L, and What Predicts Passing

A year-by-year plan for law students: what to know as a 1L, which electives help, how to prepare during 2L and 3L, MPRE timing, graduation timing and the documents to collect. You do not need to study for the bar as a 1L, but you should learn how it works. In 2L take bar-tested courses and consider the MPRE. In 3L finish requirements, register with your board on time and start light practice. Your school's support and your own habits matter more than one class. Focus on learning the law and developing exam skills. Find out which jurisdiction you may want to practice in, and read its admission rules early, since some have student registration deadlines. Keep good notes and outlines, since you will use them later.

01

1L year

02

2L year

Take the courses the bar tests, especially those you will not otherwise study, such as evidence, business associations and constitutional law. Consider taking professional responsibility, then the MPRE, so the material is fresh. If your school offers a bar support program, join early.

03

3L year

Confirm graduation requirements and your jurisdiction's application deadlines. Many applications open months before the exam, and character and fitness review can be lengthy. Do light practice throughout the year, but do not skip your finals for the bar.

04

Which electives to take

There is no need to take every bar subject, but gaps cost you study time later. If a subject was never covered, plan extra time for it. A class that forces you to write timed exams and receive feedback is worth taking.

05

Do grades and school predict passing?

Law school grades, LSAT scores and school-level pass rates correlate with bar results, which is why schools use them to identify students who need support. They describe groups, not individuals. If your school's pass rate is low, use every support service and consider an outside course.

06

December graduation and February exams

A December graduate has a short runway before February and may prefer July. If your school allows you to take the bar before the degree is conferred, confirm the certification steps.

07

Documents to collect before graduation

Gather your transcript request, proof of degree, employment and address history for the past several years, references, and any documentation for accommodations. A missing document can delay your application.

08

Clinics, internships and admission requirements

Some jurisdictions accept clinical or internship work toward skills, pro bono or practice requirements. Check the rule before you assume credit.

QUICK ANSWERS

Common questions

Should I study for the bar exam during my first year of law school?+

No dedicated study is needed. Learn your material well, find out the admission rules of the jurisdiction you may want and keep good outlines for later.

Do law school grades predict bar passage?+

They correlate with results across groups, but they do not decide individual outcomes. Structured practice and feedback can change your result.

Can I take the bar exam before I receive my degree?+

Some jurisdictions allow it if the school certifies you will graduate soon. Others do not, so check the rule and the certification deadline.
