Falling behind or an impossible schedule
Not retaining, or studying a lot without improving
This is usually too much passive input. Swap some reading or lectures for questions and closed-book recall. Space your reviews, and test yourself on last week's material. If you are exhausted, sleep and rest are part of the fix.
Scores stuck or getting worse
Check whether the questions are getting harder, since progressing to new subjects often lowers scores. Then sort recent errors by cause. If they are the same topics again, your review is not working, so restructure it. If they are misreadings, slow down on the call. A bad week can be noise, so look at three or four sets before drawing conclusions.
Understanding the explanation but missing new questions
You are recognizing, not recalling. Before reading an explanation, try to write the rule from memory. After reviewing, do a similar question from a different set a few days later.
Overthinking and changing right answers to wrong ones
Set a rule: change an answer only if you can name the specific rule or fact that justifies it. Track your changes in practice. If more go from right to wrong, stop changing unless you are certain.
Running out of time on essays and MPTs
For essays, cut your outline time, aim for issue coverage before depth, and stop at the time limit. For MPTs, write from a skeleton you build after the task memo, and start writing before you finish reading. Practice with a hard stop.
Memorizing questions instead of learning rules
If you recognize a question and remember its answer without the reason, your score is inflated. Write the rule each time, and use fresh questions for measurement.
Too many resources, and whether to switch
Stick with one main course and a limited set of supplements. Switching mid-course costs weeks and rarely fixes a habit problem. Switch only if the format truly does not work for you, for example if you cannot follow the lecture style or the feedback is useless. Add a tutor for a specific, diagnosed weakness.
Recovering after a bad simulation or an interruption
A bad simulation is data, not a prediction. Review it the same day, pick two fixes and continue. After illness or a family emergency, restart with a short plan for the next week, not a huge catch-up.
Common questions
What should I do if I fall behind in bar prep?+
List what remains, prioritize the highest-weight and weakest subjects, cut the rest to summaries or questions, and ask your provider about a reset schedule. Do not try to make up every missed lecture.
Why are my practice scores not improving?+
Common causes are passive study, weak error review, timing problems and new harder subjects. Sort your recent misses by cause and change one thing for a week.
Should I change bar prep courses in the middle?+
Rarely. Switching costs weeks and does not fix habits. Change only if the format truly fails you, and consider adding a tutor for a specific weakness instead.
What to do next
- 1
Name your symptom and match it to one of the five causes.
- 2
Change one thing this week and measure it.
- 3
Ask your provider about a schedule reset if you are behind.
