Best Bar Prep Course for ADHD: What to Look For, What to Request, and How to Plan Around the Timeline

How to choose bar prep if you have ADHD: course features that help, why accommodations paperwork comes first, documentation NCBE asks for, review times, and a study structure that works with attention differences. No course is best for ADHD by itself, so choose on structure: short lessons, a plan that tells you what to do each day, frequent small practice sets and a person who checks your writing. BARBRI (20 to 30 minute lectures, adaptive plan), Themis (shorter lectures, dedicated essay grader) and Kaplan (live seminars) all fit some of that. The bigger decision is the accommodations request, which can take months and is denied often enough that you should start before you enroll.

01

Start with the accommodations, not the course

Requests for extended time or a separate room are the most common ADHD accommodations, and they are examined closely. NCBE's guidelines say documentation must come from a qualified professional, on letterhead, typed in English, dated and signed, and the clinician must have training in the differential diagnosis of ADHD. NCBE says review typically takes at least 25 business days, and its MPRE accommodation requests received after the registration deadline are not considered for that administration. Bar boards set their own deadlines and forms, so read your jurisdiction's rules before anything else.

02

Why requests get denied

Reporting by the ABA Journal found bar examinees have little success with accommodation requests, and that denials often cite insufficient documentation and a history of strong or average achievement in school and testing. If you were diagnosed as an adult or have never had accommodations, expect more questions. A testing evaluation booked shortly before your deadline is a common problem.

03

Course features that help

Look for short lessons. BARBRI lists 20-to-30-minute lectures and animated lessons; Themis emphasizes shorter lectures and a four-month primary window. Look for a daily plan you do not have to build: BARBRI advertises an adaptive plan that reshuffles when you fall behind, Themis a personalized planner. Look for accountability, such as Kaplan's live sessions, a tutor or a study partner. And look for a way to get writing checked by a person, since ADHD often hurts timed essays before it hurts multiple choice.

04

Structure that tends to work

Use fixed blocks with a start and end time rather than a to-do list. Do questions in short timed sets. Put your phone in another room. Keep an error log so the day ends with something written. Schedule the hard subject when your attention is best, not after lunch. If you take medication, keep the same schedule during practice exams that you will use on exam day, and ask your board whether medication may be brought into the room.

05

Practice with the accommodation you will get

If you are approved for extra time, take full practice exams at that length. If you are denied, appeal quickly, and prepare for standard time in the meantime. Practicing at the wrong length is the most avoidable error in this process.

06

Ask providers before you pay

Ask whether access can be extended if you fall behind, how quickly essays are graded, and what happens to your pricing if your exam date moves. Get refund and guarantee terms in writing.
