Start with official free materials
Official paid study aids may be the highest-value purchase in an otherwise free plan because they provide authenticated exam content. Keep those items separate from course-authored questions.
Fill each learning function
A complete self-study system needs a readable outline, condensed attack sheet, active-recall deck, focused questions, mixed timed sets, essay or constructed-response work, performance tasks, full simulations, and an error log. A folder of PDFs is not a course until it is sequenced and reviewed.
- Blueprint and administration router
- Black-letter doctrine and issue maps
- Licensed or released authentic practice
- Original explanations and extra volume
- Writing rubrics, models, and feedback
- Timed simulations and remediation
Protect accuracy and copyright
Avoid bootleg copies of commercial outlines, recalled live questions, and unlabeled question dumps. Besides legal and ethical problems, these materials can contain wrong answers or outdated scope. Record the edition and administration for every resource.
What NCBE gives away
NCBE's NextGen page says candidates can try free sample multiple-choice questions, integrated question sets and performance tasks, and can preview the exam software. It also offers an interactive tutorial that lets you explore the question types and features. NCBE notes the tutorial runs in an unsecured environment, so test day may differ slightly.
For the legacy exam, NCBE's MPT page offers free summaries of MPTs from 2022 through 2026 and free MPTs with point sheets from older administrations, February 2016 to July 2020. Its MEE page offers the February 2026 questions without analyses and older questions with analyses.
NCBE's study aids page also lists free resources, including the NextGen sample questions, and invites candidates to sign up for an email when new study materials are released. Keep a dated list of each free resource you use and which exam it matches.
A free-only eight-week allocation
A free-only plan works best when each resource has one job. Use the official NCBE study aids for question style and the subject outlines, your law school's academic support office for a diagnostic, and the jurisdiction's own board page for the rules and sample essays. Give each resource a fixed slot instead of rotating among them.
One split for eight weeks at 40 hours a week: weeks 1 to 5, 15 hours on subject review from your own outlines and 20 on official practice questions, 5 on essays; weeks 6 to 8, cut review to 8 hours, raise timed practice to 22 and writing to 10. Track what free material cannot give you, usually graded feedback on your writing, and decide by week 3 whether one paid add-on for that alone is worth the cost.
