Create an all-in budget
Course promotions are time-sensitive. Record the date viewed and read the enrollment agreement for payment deadlines, cancellation, repeat guarantees, and access expiration.
Search for funding before sacrificing preparation time
A free or lower-cost self-study plan can work, but it still needs a complete scope map, authentic practice, writing review, simulations, and a calendar. Free is not complete by default; expensive is not effective by default.
Spend against the limiting factor
If doctrine and schedule are stable but writing is weak, targeted grading may be worth more than a second full course. If the baseline is broadly weak, a structured course may be more efficient than assembling disconnected supplements. Retakers should diagnose before repurchasing the same package.
Official costs and dates to budget
NCBE's MPRE registration page says the test fee for all 2026 and 2027 MPRE administrations is $185. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. central time on the deadline, which NCBE lists as September 17, 2026, January 21, 2027, June 17, 2027 and September 21, 2027. Each deadline is for a specific administration, so a missed date costs a later exam.
NCBE's study aids page says that if you bought an MBE, MEE, MPT or MPRE study aid before August 1, 2026 and still have time remaining, you may request continued access for free. Your original answers and performance data will not be available. Check before paying twice.
How the total adds up, with example figures
These figures are examples, not any provider's prices. Say a course lists at $2,800, a discount code lowers it to $2,400, and the essay-grading add-on is $350, the printed books $120 and a two-week access extension $150. Your all-in price is $3,020 with the extension and $2,870 without it. Add the exam application fee, the NCBE investigation fee, laptop software and any lodging near the test site, because the real budget is the whole path to your seat.
Then divide by weeks: $2,870 over eight weeks is about $359 a week, which tells you what a lost week costs. Ask each provider what happens to the price if the exam date moves, and whether a discount stacks with a school or employer program. Record the date you checked the price, because promotions end.
