What the boards say the MEE covers, and what changed in July 2026
Indiana's Board describes the MEE as six 30-minute essays, three hours in all, on the seven MBE subjects plus Business Associations. Effective with the July 2026 exam, Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates and Secured Transactions are no longer tested on the MEE, and Family Law and Trusts and Estates may still appear on the MPT from July 2026 to February 2028. Michigan, Alaska and Indiana each publish the same change.
That shrinks the memorization list for the MEE, but it does not shrink a state's own list. Georgia's essays still draw on Family Law, Georgia Practice and Procedure, Non-Monetary Remedies and Trusts, Wills and Estates, and UCC Articles 2 and 3, and Secured Transactions is no longer tested there either.
How the boards grade essays
New Hampshire says its Board grades each MEE answer on a scale of 1 to 6, judges each answer individually with no curve, weights the six questions equally, and grades on law of general application, not New Hampshire law. It does not require a passing grade on every question, only adequate overall performance that contributes to a passing total. Michigan says it grades the MPT and MEE on NCBE's 6-point scale.
The MEE is 30% of the total in Illinois and Kentucky, so each of six essays is worth about 5% of the total there.
