The Law School Application Timeline: Rolling Admissions and When to Apply

How rolling admissions actually works, why earlier applications have an advantage, and a realistic month-by-month application timeline. Most law schools admit on a rolling basis instead of reviewing every application after one fixed deadline, meaning earlier complete applications are reviewed against a larger pool of remaining open seats. A realistic timeline for fall enrollment starts LSAT preparation and recommender requests roughly a year in advance, targets a final LSAT score by the summer or early fall before your intended enrollment, and submits complete applications early in the fall admissions cycle instead of near each school's final deadline.

01

Why rolling admissions changes your strategy

A school reviewing applications on a rolling basis fills its class gradually across the cycle. An application submitted in September or October, when nearly the full class remains open, is generally viewed more favorably at the margins than an equivalent application submitted in March, when only a small number of seats remain.

This doesn't mean submitting an incomplete or rushed application early — a complete, well-prepared application submitted early in the cycle beats both a rushed early one and a strong but late one.

02

A realistic backward-planned timeline

Working backward from a fall enrollment target: begin LSAT preparation roughly 9 to 12 months out, sit for the LSAT with at least one retake window in reserve before early fall, request recommendation letters and order transcripts in the summer before the cycle opens, and aim to submit complete applications in September or October instead of at each school's final deadline.

  • 9–12 months out: begin LSAT preparation
  • 6–9 months out: sit for the LSAT, with a retake window in reserve
  • 3–6 months out: request transcripts and recommendation letters
  • Early in the cycle (typically September–October): submit complete applications

The timing LSAC gives applicants

LSAC's steps page says most law schools require the LSAT. Many require you to take it by November or December for admission the following fall. Taking the test earlier, in June or September or October, is advisable. It advises scheduling your test date with enough time to receive your score before your first application is due. It also advises registering for CAS approximately six to eight weeks before your first application deadline. The CAS page's FAQ says at least four to six weeks.

LSAC says to allow two weeks for U.S. or Canadian transcripts to be processed once they arrive. Allow another two weeks for a recommendation once LSAC receives it from the recommender. International transcripts may take longer. Its optional Candidate Referral Service is free and lets law schools find you based on characteristics such as GPA, LSAT score or location.

2026-2027 LSAT dates and the transcript deadline schools face

LSAC's registration page, retrieved on September 21, 2026, lists these U.S. and Canada LSAT dates. Testing begins November 11, 2026 (register by October 1) and January 13, 2027 (register by December 1). It begins February 12 (register by December 29), April 8 (register by February 25) and June 9, 2027 (register by April 29). Confirm current dates on LSAC's site before you plan around them.

On the school side, ABA Standard 502 says a law school must have each enrolled student's official transcripts on file by October 15 for fall matriculants, except in extraordinary circumstances. It must not let a student enroll in a later semester without them. A transcript verified by a third-party credential assembly service and delivered to the school counts as official, which is one reason to send transcripts to LSAC early. Send transcripts early.

YOUR NEXT MOVE

What to do next

  1. 1

Work backward from your target enrollment date, not forward from today's date.

  2. 2

Build in at least one LSAT retake window before your intended submission month.

  3. 3

Submit complete applications early in the cycle instead of near each deadline.

  4. 4

Confirm each specific target school's own deadlines directly — they vary.
