Separate authentic questions from authored questions
The most important label is the source of each item. Both providers state that their banks include licensed NCBE questions and provider-authored or modified questions. Verify current counts on the official product page, because catalogs change. Authenticity helps calibrate style; original questions add volume and targeted teaching.
Use NCBE’s own study-aid center for the authoritative source of official materials. A commercial explanation is the provider’s instructional product, not an official NCBE rationale unless specifically identified.
Price table and cost per real question
BARBRI's AdaptiBar page listed the MCQ Simulator at $495 on September 25, 2026. UWorld's page, read September 24, 2026, listed MBE QBank access for the February 2027 exam and for July 2027 at $449 each, and a July 2027 early-prep option at $549.
- AdaptiBar MCQ Simulator: $495. More than 1,375 licensed NCBE questions, adaptive algorithm, statistics by subject and subtopic. About $0.36 per licensed question.
- UWorld MBE QBank: $449. More than 1,900 MBE questions, of which more than 1,150 are licensed NCBE questions, plus one self-assessment, unlimited practice tests, customizable flashcards, a digital notebook and a mobile app. About $0.39 per licensed question, but $0.24 per question of any kind.
- UWorld early prep for July 2027: $549.
- AdaptiBar add-ons: Writing Guide $295, video lectures $395 ($295 with the simulator).
Dated evidence from the providers
AdaptiBar's page says over 40 percent of 2023 bar takers used the MCQ Simulator and shows a testimonial crediting the Writing Guide with a 20-point written-score improvement. We cannot verify either claim. UWorld's page states the counts above; the number of licensed questions is the useful part. Themis includes UWorld's MBE QBank in its course, and BARBRI's Elite tier includes AdaptiBar, so your course may already give you one of them.
Verdict
If you are choosing with no course attached: for a pure real-question drill, AdaptiBar has more licensed items and costs slightly less per licensed question. For learning from explanations, UWorld's longer answer write-ups, flashcards and app are the draw. If you cannot decide, pick the one whose demo you would open every day. If you already have Themis or BARBRI Elite, do not buy the other bank until you have finished the one you own.
Choose the feedback style you will actually use
AdaptiBar may fit candidates who want an algorithm to concentrate work around weaker areas and who value a streamlined adaptive loop. UWorld may fit candidates who learn from longer written explanations, diagrams, tables, and self-created flashcards. Test both interfaces if trials are available.
The best bank is the one you review deliberately. Rapidly completing large sets without classifying errors produces less value than a smaller set with rule retrieval, distractor analysis, and scheduled retesting.
Account for the NextGen transition
Standalone multiple choice remains part of NextGen, but a legacy MBE bank alone does not train integrated client files, research tasks, constructed responses, or performance work. NextGen candidates should verify what the current product adds beyond traditional MBE practice.
What a question bank has to reproduce
NCBE says every MBE question is followed by four possible answers and is designed to be answered according to generally accepted fundamental legal principles unless noted otherwise. It says scored questions are distributed evenly, 25 from each of seven subjects, and that 25 of the 200 questions are unscored pretest items.
For NextGen, NCBE says multiple-choice questions have four to six options and one or more correct answers. That is a different answer pattern, so a bank that only drills single-answer questions will not rehearse it.
NCBE also says the pretest questions look the same as scored ones, so the real exam does not flag them. Practice as though every question counts. Judge a bank on how well its explanations teach the tested principle, not on how many items it lists.
How to read a question-bank analytics screen
Whatever bank you use, five numbers decide whether its analytics are useful: accuracy by subject, accuracy by subtopic, average seconds per question, the share of misses you had marked as sure, and accuracy on questions you had seen before. The fourth is the most diagnostic. A miss you were sure about is a wrong rule, and a miss you guessed on is a coverage gap, and they need different review.
Do a weekly check: sort subtopics by lowest accuracy with at least 15 questions attempted, pick the bottom three, and spend the next two study blocks on those only. A bank that hides subtopic data or reports only an overall score is telling you less than a spreadsheet you keep yourself, so copy the numbers each Sunday.
Common questions
Which is cheaper, AdaptiBar or UWorld?+
UWorld's MBE QBank listed at $449 and AdaptiBar's MCQ Simulator at $495 in September 2026. Per licensed question AdaptiBar is slightly cheaper, about $0.36 against about $0.39.
Which has more real NCBE questions?+
AdaptiBar lists more than 1,375 licensed questions and UWorld more than 1,150, though UWorld has more than 1,900 questions in total.
How many answer choices do MBE questions have?+
Four, according to NCBE, and you should choose the best answer from the four stated alternatives.
Can an MBE question have more than one correct answer?+
No. NCBE says examinees should mark only one answer for each question, and multiple answers are scored as incorrect.
Can a NextGen multiple-choice question have more than one correct answer?+
Yes. NCBE says NextGen multiple-choice questions have between four and six answer options and one or more correct answers.
What law applies unless a question says otherwise?+
Generally accepted fundamental legal principles, according to NCBE, with Federal Rules assumed for Civil Procedure and Evidence and UCC Articles 1 and 2 for Contracts.
How many scored questions come from each MBE subject?+
25 of the 175 scored questions come from each of the seven subjects, according to NCBE, so a bank should balance subjects the same way.
Why do unscored pretest questions matter to practice?+
NCBE says they are indistinguishable from scored questions, so a bank should train you to answer every question at full effort.
What should a bank's explanations do?+
Explain why the correct answer wins and why every distractor fails, and say what to review next.
How large is the MBE candidate pool?+
62,309 examinees sat the MBE in 2025, including 46,959 in July and 15,350 in February, according to NCBE's 2025 statistics.
