What New York asks for
BARBRI's New York page describes the UBE across two days: two 90-minute MPT tasks and six 30-minute MEE questions on Day 1 and 200 MBE questions on Day 2, weighted 50 percent MBE, 30 percent MEE and 20 percent MPT, with a passing score of 266 out of 400. It lists 2027 dates of February 23 and 24 and July 27 and 28, application windows of October 1 to 31 for February and March 1 to 31 for July, a $250 exam fee ($750 for foreign-trained applicants), a $100 laptop fee and $29 for the NYLE software. It also lists an MPRE score of 85, the NYLE (a 50-question open-book test, 60 percent to pass), the free NYLC online course of 17 hours and 50 hours of pro bono. New York will administer the NextGen UBE starting July 2028.
Choosing a course
Because the exam is the UBE, the main comparison is BARBRI, Themis, Kaplan and the smaller providers on price, writing feedback and access. See our comparisons. If you may want to take your score to another state, check that the course covers NextGen rules that will apply then.
Do not let the NYLE catch you
The NYLE is open book but timed, and candidates who leave it for after the bar exam add stress at the worst time. Watch the NYLC lectures during the semester, then take the NYLE when you are ready. See our New York guide for the timeline.
Score transfer
A 266 UBE score can be transferred to many other jurisdictions within their time limits. New York's own rules and the receiving state's rules both matter.
