Best Bar Prep for the Georgia Bar Exam: State Essays, the MBE and Course Choice

Georgia's exam format, essay subjects, scoring and fees per BARBRI's state page, what BARBRI, Themis and Kaplan offer, and how to choose a course. Georgia's exam pairs the MBE with Georgia-specific essays and two MPTs, so a course needs a real Georgia essay component. BARBRI's Georgia page lists 270 out of 400 to pass with 50 percent from Day 1 and 50 percent from the MBE, an MBE floor of 115 before essays are graded, and an MPRE score of 75. BARBRI, Themis and Kaplan all sell Georgia courses.

01

The format

BARBRI's Georgia page lists Day 1 as two 90-minute MPT tasks and four 45-minute essays, and Day 2 as the 200-question MBE, on February 23 and 24 and July 27 and 28, 2027. Essay subjects can include business organizations, commercial paper, family law, federal practice and procedure, Georgia practice and procedure, non-monetary remedies, professional ethics, secured transactions, trusts, and wills and estates, as well as MBE subjects and Georgia distinctions. It lists a MBE scaled score of 115 required before essays are graded.

02

Fees

The page lists a fitness application of $450 before graduation or $750 within a year, a bar exam application of $400 plus $107 for current law students and $550 plus $107 for graduates, a $185 MPRE and a $105 laptop registration, with a $500 late fee. Confirm all figures with the Georgia Office of Bar Admissions.

03

Choosing a Georgia bar exam course

Ask how many Georgia essays are taught and graded, how the course handles subjects like commercial paper and secured transactions that are less common in other states, and whether Georgia distinctions on MBE subjects are taught as their own topic. Themis lists a traditional 8 to 10 week program with UWorld MBE access and a dedicated essay grader. Kaplan lists Complete, LL.M. and MBE-only options.

Two practical checks help before you pay: request a sample graded Georgia essay so you can see how much feedback comes back, and confirm the course keeps your MBE practice access open through the last exam day rather than ending a few weeks earlier.

04

The 115 rule

A low MBE score can cost you your essays being graded at all, so treat the MBE as the gate. Do not spend all your time on the state essays.
