Best Bar Prep for the Texas Bar Exam: UBE Prep, the 270 Score and the Texas Law Component

Texas uses the UBE with a 270 passing score and a separate online Texas Law Component. Format, fees and deadlines from BARBRI's Texas page, and how to pick a course. Texas gives the UBE, so any full national course covers the exam itself. The Texas-specific work is the Texas Law Component, an online course of about 12 hours costing $150 that every passing applicant completes. The passing score is 270, higher than many UBE states, which makes multiple-choice accuracy and essay feedback the two things to compare in a course.

01

What Texas requires

BARBRI's Texas page lists the UBE weighted 50 percent MBE (200 questions), 30 percent MEE (six essays) and 20 percent MPT (two tasks), with a 270 out of 400 passing score. It lists 2027 exam dates of February 23 and 24 and July 27 and 28, an MPRE score of 85, laptop charges of $90 for software and $50 for the laptop fee, and a $75 late extension fee. For the July 2026 exam it listed a regular filing period of December 4, 2025 to February 1, 2026, late filing through April 1 and final filing through May 1. Confirm current dates with the Texas Board of Law Examiners.

02

The Texas Law Component

Applicants who pass must complete the Texas Law Component, an online course of about 12 hours that costs $150. BARBRI's page says it can be completed up to a year before or two years after passing. Doing it during a slow week of the semester keeps it off your plate after the exam.

03

What a 270 means for the course you pick

A 270 is a demanding standard. Choose a course whose licensed questions you can measure yourself against, and ask how essays and performance tests are graded and how fast. Compare BARBRI Premium ($2,099 shown on September 25, 2026), Themis ($2,995 listed, $1,895 limited-time) and Kaplan on those two points. If you plan to move states later, a UBE score is portable, but each state sets its own minimum.

04

How to choose

Use a same-hour trial in two courses and read the guarantee and access terms in writing. Our comparison pages cover the differences, and our Texas guide covers the schedule.
