Questions: number, source and explanations
Ask whether questions are sorted by subtopic so you can drill a weak area, and whether repeat use is tracked so you are not inflating your own scores.
Writing: who grades and how fast
For essays and performance tests, unlimited submissions mean little if feedback takes a week or is generic. Ask who grades (a human, an AI system, or a model answer comparison), how long it takes, and whether comments point to specific lines in your answer. AI feedback can be quick and useful for structure, and human graders can catch reasoning errors. Neither replaces writing under time pressure.
Schedules, diagnostics and tracking
Look for a diagnostic at the start, a schedule that tells you what to do each day, and a way to change the plan when you fall behind. The reporting should split errors by subject and, better, by type: rule not known, rule misapplied, fact missed, misread question, or ran out of time. A single completion percentage does not tell you what to fix.
Simulations and interface practice
A full-length simulated exam under real timing is the closest thing to the actual test you can do at home. For NextGen, practice on the interface that includes the digital notepad, highlighting, and split-screen tools if the provider offers it, and also use the official practice on the exam platform when it is available.
Support: instructors, office hours and tutoring
Find out how quickly instructors answer questions, whether office hours are live, and whether tutoring is included or extra. A slow response in the last two weeks costs more than a slow response in week three.
Accessibility and devices
If you need captions, screen-reader compatibility, adjustable text size or offline access, ask before buying. Also check the mobile app on your actual device with a demo.
How to read a pass-rate claim
A provider's pass rate is only comparable to another number if it counts the same people. Ask who is included, whether repeat takers are separated, whether only students who finished a set amount are counted, and whether the numbers are audited. A claim without those answers is marketing.
Common questions
Are AI-graded bar essays reliable?+
They can give useful and fast structural feedback such as missed issues and organization, but they can also miss reasoning errors. Many candidates use AI feedback for volume and a human grader for a few key essays.
How many practice questions do I need in a bank?+
There is no magic number. What counts is that you complete and review enough timed questions, commonly well over a thousand across a prep period, and that the bank has enough unique questions to avoid repeating.
Does a bigger question bank mean a better course?+
Not by itself. Look at where the questions come from, how detailed the explanations are, and whether the reports help you find weaknesses.
