Use a six-part review
Review lucky guesses as errors.
Progress from focused to mixed and timed
Begin with focused subtopic sets while learning boundaries. Interleave subjects as the course progresses. Then use larger timed blocks and realistic pacing checkpoints. Do not sacrifice explanation review merely to force a higher daily count.
What the bars say the MBE is and how it counts
Indiana's Board lists the MBE as 200 multiple-choice questions taken over six hours, on Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, Torts and Civil Procedure. Its scaled score carries different weight by state: 50% of the total in Georgia, Illinois and Kentucky, and 40% in Virginia's combined score.
Because the score is scaled by NCBE, raw counts do not compare across administrations. Kentucky's FAQ notes that the MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE and UBE totals, and New Hampshire says it scales the combined MPT and MEE raw score to the MBE score with the mean and standard deviation method NCBE recommends.
MBE score transfer thresholds worth knowing
Some bars accept a transferred MBE score by itself. Alabama accepts a score of 140 or higher for 36 months, Minnesota accepts 145 or higher within 36 months on the same exam that led to admission elsewhere, and North Dakota accepts 150 or higher from a non-UBE exam. Florida has accepted transferred MBE scores since November 30, 2017 if they meet its rules.
Other bars refuse them: Montana no longer accepts transferred MBE scores, Georgia does not, Kentucky does not let applicants bank an MBE score, and Illinois ended MBE transfer as of the July 2022 exam. A candidate reviewing MBE questions should learn which side of that line the target state sits on.

Question 1
A candidate reviews a missed MBE item using a six-part review method. Which step comes right after explaining why the correct option is best?
Question 2
A candidate answers a question correctly but admits the choice was a lucky guess. Under a six-part review method, how should that item be logged?
Question 3
Before any review begins, a review method has a candidate label every practice question by its source. What is that labeling step actually for?
Common questions
How many questions are on the MBE?+
200 multiple-choice questions, taken over six hours in two three-hour sessions of 100 questions each, according to Indiana's Board.
What subjects does the MBE test?+
Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, Torts and Civil Procedure, as Indiana's Board lists them.
How much of my total score is the MBE?+
50% in Georgia, Illinois and Kentucky, and 40% in Virginia's combined weighting of 60% essay and 40% MBE.
Can I use an MBE score from another state?+
It depends. Alabama accepts 140 or higher for 36 months and Minnesota accepts 145 or higher, but Montana, Georgia and Kentucky do not accept transferred MBE scores.
Why do raw MBE counts not compare across exams?+
NCBE scales MBE scores, and states scale the written scores to the MBE. New Hampshire, for example, scales combined MPT and MEE raw scores to the MBE with the mean and standard deviation method.
How long per question should I aim for?+
About 1.8 minutes, since 200 questions are given across six hours of testing.
Does a low MBE score stop my essays from being graded?+
Not in Georgia, which grades every MPT and essay answer whatever the MBE score, and there is no minimum MBE score for them to be read.
Is the MBE part of the NextGen exam?+
NCBE is replacing the legacy exam, and Virginia says NCBE will discontinue the MBE after February 2028. NextGen mixes multiple-choice, short-answer and constructed-response questions.
What to do next
- 1
Separate authentic and original question pools.
- 2
Start with a diagnostic by subject.
- 3
Review every option on every uncertain item.
- 4
Log rule, fact, application, reading, and timing errors.
- 5
Retest the same boundary in a new pattern.
