BARBRI vs. Helix Bar Review: Access Window, Official Questions, Coaching, and Claims

A comparison of BARBRI and Helix based on each provider's own pages on September 24, 2026, including start date, study schedules, official NCBE questions, writing feedback and how to check their claims. Helix says its course opens five months before the exam and offers recommended schedules of 10, 12, 16 and 20 weeks with an adaptive plan and free attorney-director coaching calls. BARBRI's Premium listed 4 or more months of access with an adaptive plan and a repeat guarantee. Helix's public pages we read listed no price, so ask for it, and treat both providers' pass claims as marketing until you know who is counted.

01

The access window

Helix's FAQ says its course opens five months before your exam, which it describes as a longer runway with less concentrated pressure, and offers recommended study schedules for 10-, 12-, 16- and 20-week timelines. BARBRI's Premium listing said 4 or more months of course access, with an optional upgrade to 6-month access, and an adaptive personal study plan with a customizable calendar. Both promise an adaptive plan. The practical question is the date access ends, since that is what a retaker or a late starter needs.

02

Official questions

Helix says its multiple-choice practice includes official NCBE practice questions plus NCBE-style questions written by its panels of law professors, that essay and performance test questions in its UBE and California courses are drawn from released prior exam questions, and that Helix NextGen includes every official NextGen UBE question. Helix also says AccessLex Institute collaborated with NCBE on sample questions and study aids. BARBRI's page lists 1,000 or more NCBE-licensed MBE questions or NextGen question sets. Both are worth confirming for your exam date.

03

Support and feedback

Helix lists grading by licensed attorney graders, a customer care team, live webinars and workshops, and free one-on-one coaching calls with a licensed Attorney Director. BARBRI's Premium lists expert feedback on NextGen written assignments or unlimited essay feedback for legacy exams, and sells coach-led strategy sessions as an add-on. If personal coaching matters to you, Helix's page describes it as included and BARBRI's as an add-on.

04

Extras and format

Helix describes universal-design features: short videos in different formats and voices, outlines with interactive checklists, digital flashcards, embedded quizzes, a game center with badges and its own question bank, Helix XP. It also says its comprehensive course includes a book bundle you keep. BARBRI's Elite listing includes AdaptiBar and CriticalPass supplements and Quimbee SideBar videos.

05

The numbers each leads with

Helix's home page states a 90 percent pass rate on the July 2025 UBE. It does not say on that page who is counted, and its FAQ adds that the only pass rate that truly matters is yours. BARBRI's page leans on its guarantee: complete the course, do not pass, and repeat without additional tuition, with supplements excluded. A pass rate needs a denominator before it means anything, so ask each for who is included and whether repeaters are separated.

06

Price

BARBRI's listing showed original prices of $2,999 (Premium) and $3,999 (Elite) with sale prices shown. The Helix pages we read did not list a course price. Helix's home page advertised a $200 discount code and a switch offer of up to $275 for people who put a deposit down elsewhere. Get Helix's price and terms by email before comparing.

07

Who might prefer which

A candidate who wants coaching included and a long runway may lean toward Helix's description, and one who wants a large national provider with tiered packages and a stated repeat guarantee may lean toward BARBRI. Those are fit hypotheses. A demo of each, with the same task, will tell you more.
