BARBRI vs. Kaplan Bar Review: What Each Lists, Where They Differ, and What to Ask

A side-by-side of BARBRI and Kaplan based on what each said on its own site on September 24, 2026: access length, questions, writing feedback, guarantees, live teaching and price. On September 24, 2026, both listed a full course with licensed-style MBE practice, writing feedback, a study plan and a repeat-if-you-do-not-pass guarantee. The visible differences were access length (BARBRI's Premium listed 4 or more months, Kaplan up to 6), live seminars (Kaplan says it offers them), question counts, and how each frames its pass claim. Kaplan's is conditioned on completing 75 percent of assigned practice.

01

What each says it includes

BARBRI's 2027 page listed for Premium: more than 1,000 NCBE-licensed MBE questions or NextGen question sets, simulated practice tests with a pass predictor, an adaptive personal study plan with a customizable calendar, expert feedback on NextGen written assignments or unlimited essay feedback for legacy exams, 20-to-30-minute lectures and animated lessons, print and digital materials, and 4 or more months of access.

Kaplan's page listed a personalized study plan, on-demand lessons plus live interactive seminars, more than 4,000 exam-like MBE questions plus previously released NCBE questions, a NextGen course with more than 3,000 questions and all released NCBE NextGen questions, unlimited grading from in-house experts or AI, four full-length practice exams (three for NextGen plus eight exam segments), textbooks for some jurisdictions, and up to six months of access.

02

Question counts are not the same kind of number

BARBRI counts its licensed NCBE questions. Kaplan counts a larger total of exam-like questions and separately mentions previously released NCBE questions. A larger total can mean more volume of provider-written questions. The number that tells you about calibration is how many are official NCBE items, and both providers should answer that in writing for your exam.

03

The two pass claims measure different things

Kaplan states that 92 percent of first-time Kaplan bar prep students who do 75 percent of the assigned practice pass the UBE the first time. That is a conditional claim: it counts students who did most of the work, so it says little about how a typical enrollee will do. BARBRI's page we read leans on its guarantee and testimonials rather than a headline rate. Neither can be compared to the other, or to a state pass rate, without knowing who is counted.

04

Guarantees

BARBRI says that if you complete a BARBRI Bar Review course and do not pass, you can repeat the course without paying additional tuition, and that exam supplements are excluded. Kaplan's page says pass guaranteed or repeat for free. Both are repeat offers, not cash refunds, and both depend on conditions in the enrollment agreement, so get the definition of completing in writing.

05

Live teaching and feedback

Kaplan describes itself as the only major bar prep provider offering live, interactive seminars and workshops, and lists an AI tutor and an instant essay grader. BARBRI's page lists adaptive planning and expert or unlimited feedback and describes optional coach-led strategy sessions as an add-on. If live sessions keep you accountable, that difference may matter more to you than a question count.

06

Price on the day we looked

BARBRI listed Premium at an original $2,999 with sale prices of $2,299 and $2,099 shown, and Elite at $3,999 with $3,299 and $3,099 shown. Elite adds AdaptiBar MCQ Simulator, the AdaptiBar Writing Guide, CriticalPass cards and Quimbee SideBar videos. Kaplan's page advertised a promotion of up to $1,000 off ending September 30 with $20 due at checkout, and we did not record a list price from that page. Confirm both prices on the live pages.

07

How to decide

Run the same one-hour test in each demo: study one lesson, do 20 questions and submit one writing sample. Note how quickly you got feedback and whether you would open the tool every day. Then email each provider the same three questions: what counts as completing the course for the guarantee, how many practice questions are official NCBE items for my exam date, and when access ends.

QUICK ANSWERS

Does Kaplan or BARBRI offer live classes?+

Kaplan's page says it is the only major provider offering live, interactive seminars. BARBRI lists on-demand lectures and coach-led sessions as an add-on. Confirm what your package includes.

What does Kaplan's 92 percent pass claim mean?+

Kaplan says 92 percent of first-time students who complete 75 percent of assigned practice pass the UBE the first time. It counts only students who did most of the work, so it is not a pass rate for all enrollees.
