The five-question comparison
Score them from what you can verify. A free demo teaches more than a review.
Course against course
For full courses such as BARBRI, Themis, Kaplan, Helix and BarMax, compare schedule length, how much of the teaching is live, how writing is graded, and whether questions are licensed from NCBE. Our head-to-head pages on BARBRI and Themis and on Themis and Kaplan show the method worked through.
Ignore the marketing language on pass rates. Ask how the provider defines who was counted.
Question bank against question bank
UWorld and AdaptiBar are the common pair. Compare the number of licensed NCBE questions, the quality of explanations, whether the tool adapts to your weak spots, and the reporting. Our UWorld and AdaptiBar guide covers this specifically.
If you are already in a course that bundles one, buy the other only if your scores plateau and you need fresh questions.
Memory tool against memory tool
Critical Pass, Brainscape, homemade cards or an Anki deck all do spaced repetition. Homemade cards force you to process the material as you build them, which is a real learning benefit, but they take time you may not have. Pre-built cards save that time and are only as good as their accuracy and how current they are. SmartBarPrep, Magicsheets, Approsheets, Crushendo, GOAT Bar Prep and Studicata are compressed outlines. Choose based on format: do you want a page you scan or cards you answer?
Course against self-study, and against a tutor
A commercial course gives structure and accountability. Self-study costs less and demands that you build the schedule and find the practice yourself. A tutor adds a person who looks at your work, and is usually best as an addition to a course or bank for a specific weakness, not as a replacement for volume of practice.
If your budget only allows one, choose the option that most reliably gets you doing timed questions and graded writing every week.
Official questions against commercial ones
Official NCBE questions are the best calibration for the real exam, and some commercial banks license them. Commercial questions written by the provider are often harder or differently framed. Both are useful, but be clear about which you are doing. Scores on the two are not interchangeable.
Common questions
Is self-study enough to pass the bar?+
For some candidates, yes, especially those with strong discipline and a plan built on official materials and a question bank. Many others benefit from a course's schedule and writing feedback, so decide from a diagnostic and your history.
Should I buy two question banks?+
Only if you finish your first bank's questions and still have weeks left, or your scores plateau. Repeating a bank with a full error log is often better than starting another.
Are official NCBE questions better than commercial ones?+
Official questions best show the real exam's style and difficulty, which is why they are the calibration standard. Commercial banks add volume, and some license NCBE questions themselves.
