What BARBRI says the phases are
Final Review comes last.
Why the same topic appears more than once
BARBRI describes a spiral method: each pass through a topic goes deeper than the one before, on the theory that repeated retrieval moves rules from short-term into long-term memory. That matches what most study-method research says about spaced repetition. The cost is that a topic feels repetitive, and candidates who skip Foundations because they remember first-year contracts often struggle later when the Deep Dive assumes the vocabulary.
How to use Foundations
Watch the episodes for subjects that are new or long forgotten, then move on. Do not try to memorize from them. Their job is to give the rule a shape so a later lecture has something to attach to. If a subject is fresh from a recent class, skim the episode and go straight to questions.
How to use Deep Dive
This is the phase where most of your hours go. Pair each lecture with licensed practice questions the same day, and write at least one timed essay per week even if the plan does not force you to. Keep an error log with the rule you missed and why. The adaptive study plan will move assignments around when you fall behind, but it cannot make you review your errors.
How to use Final Review
Use it for full-length timed sets and for your worst subjects. Do not start new outlines in the last two weeks. If your practice scores are flat, change the method (do questions untimed and explain each answer aloud) before you add hours.
What the phases do not replace
They do not replace state-specific study. If you sit in Florida, California, Virginia or another state with its own essays, add that content on your own calendar, since the national phases will not cover it in full. See our guides for your state.
Common questions
What is BARBRI's Foundations phase?+
Foundations is the first phase, built from short animated episodes that introduce essential rules through storytelling before you study them in depth.
What is the Deep Dive in BARBRI?+
Deep Dive is the second phase, where the same concepts return in more sophisticated form with lectures and practice. It is where most of your study hours land.
Can I skip Foundations?+
You can skim it for subjects you know well, but skipping it for subjects you have forgotten usually makes phase 2, the Deep Dive, harder.
What to do next
- 1
Mark which subjects need Foundations episodes and which you can skim.
- 2
Schedule one timed writing task per week from the first Deep Dive week.
- 3
Keep one error log across all three phases.
